3 Ways to Help Darfur

After writing my post about Darfur yesterday, I came across the website Savedarfur.org . It is a well put together website with practical information for individuals like myself whom want to help, but do not know what can be done. There is so much information the site that I think I’d be doing it harm by quoting bits and pieces of it. I recommend  (urge or command a better word?) you to go over there and look through the site. It breaks it all down to something that can be done right now by anyone. Once you are done over there, come back and I want to give my answer to the Road to heavenquestion I posed on yesterday’s post.

It is very frustrating trying to figure out how to live while knowing about the truth going on in Darfur. If I go to work and get a drink afterwards, does that mean I have forgotten about Darfur? Then again, if I drop everything to completely sell out and protest against the genocide, will I lose my income, life, & responsibilities? The balancing act and self-imposing guilt is something that I have trouble facing everyday in this new era of mass media. In order to keep my sanity, I’ve developed a routine to help in these times.

  1. Reflect and Pray – The first thing I do is allow the event to fill my soul. I may never be able to fully understand the emotions and situation of these people,  but it is important that I take out the time in my day to reflect on it. Allow yourself to be frustrated with the world and God. Ask yourself, how things like this could’ve happened and what you would do in the same situation. Afterwards pray ferverntly to God. Ask for mercy with the victims, and plead for discernment and awareness for everyone else.
  2. Do Something – Savedarfur.org has many ideas on their Take Action page for everyday individuals. Simple things like spread the word and send money really can make a difference. There also more time consuming acts like visiting a congressman or joining a save darfur protest group.  All of these ideas are good. By simply talking to your friends while out at dinner might persuade someone to do something that you are unable to pursue.
  3. Remember and Move On – It is ok to go out and watch a movie or go on a date. Life should not end because of the tragedy. It should reinvigorate you and make you more appreciative of the everyday things that you can accomplish. Whether it is deciding on a flavor of ice cream or arguing with a spouse, we need to thank God that we have the opportunity to do these things. Put pictures up around your office or home to help you remember what is taking place on the other side of the world. Remind yourself of the struggles and enjoy every moment in life. Enjoy them for the individual who does not have the opportunity.

I think whatever Miracle wrote about the three ways of saving Darfur, is a wrong strategy. I happened to stumbled across this article for a project I’m doing in school about Darfur. The citizens of Darfur are desperate, and dying because they depend on the rest of the world to help. But that dosn’t mean they aren’t humans. We are all humans just to remind this world to stand up for others who are right. “Remain standing for the correct reason even if you’re the only one!” this quote is saying that we should all stand up for human rights! Should we let the government of Sudan continue to kill the innocent people of Darfur? No we shouldn’t!
There are multiple ways to save such a country in this tradegy, to convince more people around the world to help. One of them is to talk about it to celebrities to encourage others to go out and help, create websites related to the issue and ways to donate money, ask celebrities to donate money to on institution. This is what II have to say and comment against Miracle’s article.
