It might seem a little confusing and odd at first, but we are just a simple community of misfits searching for something larger than ourselves.

I’m a little overweight. Allright, I’ll admit it. I’m 30 lbs. overweight. It started happening in College when I didn’t think about metabolism and greasy pizza at 1 in the morning. When you are growing up, eating doesn’t affect you. I would eat a half a pizza, a dozen wings, and drink a 2-liter of soda on a Friday night as a teen. I never gained a pound. Things changed once I entered college. I stopped growing and my metabolism dropped. I didn’t concern myself about it, until it was too late.
Everyone knows the forumla to lose weight. It isn’t rocket science. Burn more calories than you take in. It is one of the simplest natural laws, but the hardest to follow. I’m not tempted to jump off a building and disobey the law of gravity, but that burrito sure does look good.
Habits vs. Diets
This is why I think named diets are dumb. They are all just different variations of the same concept: burn more than you take in. I’ve tried quite a few, and failed miserably. I think the reason why we fail to follow through on losing weight has nothing to do with this or that diet. It has to do with deeper urges, habits and feelings towards hunger.
I don’t fail on the low-carb diet because bread controls me. I fail because I don’t feel full. This is the truth about overeating. We feel like our stomachs are empty and it would be allright to add piece of cake. Therefore, our job is not to follow a superficial diet. It is to set up an atmosphere where you don’t think you need nor want more food. The following are three habits that help trick your mind into feeling uncomfortably full.
- Cut Up All Meals into small Pieces [including sandwiches] - I love subs and sandwiches, but I don’t feel like I ate as much I did after finishing. Our mind tricks us into thinking because the few bites we did eat wasn’t that much food. Cut up your sandwich to eat it and you’ll realize how much food you are actually eating. A general rule of thumb is the more bites it takes to eat a meal, the more your mind thinks it has eaten.
- Stop moving and eat in a still atmosphere - Our lives are continuously moving and it shows in our eating habits. We’ve created a culture thats afraid to be still. The fast food in the car, the lunches at Chili’s, and the take-out around the television are very dangerous to losing weight. When we are busy doing other stuff besides simply eating, we forget that we did eat a big meal. If we stop to eat and only eat for however long, then we will be less inclined to pick up a snack later.
- Wear uncomfortable clothing - Many times we eat that second helping is that there is nothing to hold us back. I never get a second plate or even a large first when I am wearing something that makes me self-conscious around the belly. When we wear that tight shirt/pants we are always aware of losing the weight. We don’t wear it because it doesn’t make us comfortable nor make us feel good about ourselves.
Group Project
**Note: This post is to introduce a group project that I am starting next week. Monday I will start a 2 week wholistic health project. Everyone is invited to join in and go through the process with me. It is not about losing weight but becoming more health-conscious. If you need to lose weight then your goal should be to lose a set number of lbs. If you just need to be more aware of what you eat then your should be to refrain from unnecesary foods.
Everyday I will post a tip/experience from my journey and will look forward to reading other participants in the comments. I will also repost some of the good tips and experiences on my main blog. The best part about it? There is a prize. Everyone who participates in each day of the project (Mon-Fri) will be entered into random drawings for sponsored prizes. I am finishing up the details of the sponsors and prizes so I will not post them at this moment. I just know that it will be worth it.
