In the presence of so much noise, we need something different. A voice that cries out of our passion for change. What will it take? God, send us this alternative noise!

It might seem a little confusing and odd at first, but we are just a simple community of misfits searching for something larger than ourselves.

To be a teacher does not mean simply to affirm that such a thing is so, or to deliver a lecture, etc. No, to be a teacher in the right sense is to be a learner. Instruction begins when you, the teacher, learn from the learner, put yourself in his place so that you may understand what he understands and the way he understands it.  - Kierkegaard

Gotcha! - Eden Photography

There he was, a young boy who looked up to me and wanted to learn everything that I knew. He thinks I am a genius with secret knowledge that no one has. Anxiously, he sat in the chair and waited for me to start. I began to talk and try to dispense my information, but the student just gave me a funny look. I knew the information. He knew I was giving it to him, but he couldn’t understand my technical jargon.

The Reality Of Teaching

We as teachers (Parents and everyone who considers themselves to be a role model included) have a tendancy to focus our attention on information or methods. I have been a professional teacher in several different settings and it is sadly the common norm. We forget about the one who needs to learn our experiences.

Teaching To Count

The point of teaching is not the information but the student. My oldest son is learning how to count and talk. He wants to talk but has a hard time grasping things controlled through the right brain. He is an extremely analytical kid (doesn’t get it from me) and can allready count to three. In both cases, my wife and I do not merely regurgitate words and numbers. We break it down to the best way that he learns.

Our Focus

If we merely repeat words and numbers to my son, it would take forever for him to learn. Instead, we studied him and figured out the best way for him to learn. This is not only a strategy for parenting babies, but is the key to being a successful teacher in any shape. We must focus first on the student and learn from her before the information and our technique. Once we become sensitive and passionate about the students then the rest will flow naturally
