The Corrupted File of Personal Fulfillment

life — Miracle on January 15, 2008 at 4:59 am

338/365:File corrupted...There is a corrupt file in our society. It has affected nearly every modern individual. We all know about it and we even try to talk about it. We label it as a natural part of life. We theorize that it is an effect of capitalism. Many call it consumerism and fight against it, but most do not understand what it truly is.

My Guilty Pleasures

I am not much of a video game junky.. except when it comes to two genres. Sports titles (Madden) and MMORPG’s are my vices. I was an original Evergeek in High School (97-01) and played some of Everquest 2. I havent committed myself to any video game in more than 3 years and its eating me up inside. I had and have too many responsibilites. Yet, I sit here with a trial version of World of Warcraft beside me. Evercrack has led me to a tougher addiction.

The situation I am going through is one of personal fulfillment. I really want to install and play the game. It is something (lets call it a goal) that I believe will make me happy. I know once I reach the goal and play for a month or two, I will get bored. Then, I will look for another goal to fulfill my life.

The Problem With Personal Fulfillment

This is where our systems have become corrupted. We try to band-aid the situation by telling ourselves that we just need to focus on reaching a state of personal contentment. The act of reaching out to fulfill these goals and desires gets labelled as the problem. Our desires become something that we need to overcome and the act of going after a desire is perceived as a weakness.

We have misdiagnosed the problem.

Personal Fulfillment Is Not A Disease But Contains A Corrupt File

It is natural to think of this fulfillment problem as a disease. How do you overcome a disease? You irradicate the bacteria or virus. We try to do the same thing here. But it is not a disease, it is a corruption in our systems. A better analogy would be a corrupt file in our computer programs. The file itself might be useful, but has come to the point where it is unusable in its current state. The results of the corrupt file either will lead your computer to continuously give you an annoying error message or to simply crash.

A lot of times, you can simply delete the file and your computer will return to normal. Other times, deleting the file can actually crash your entire hard drive. You must restore the computer to an earlier point to fix it correctly.

Goal Setting Is A Survival Instinct

I believe that this epedimic is more akin to a file corruption than a disease because of its relation to one of our survival instincts. When our lives become unstable and unsecure, we rely on our skills to set goals and move forward. If we are starving, our first goal is to get that first meal. After reaching that goal, we set our sights on finding a way to receive a steady stream of food. There is no time to enjoy reaching the goal, because you might return to your previous state if you don’t stay focused on the new goal.

I am not starving.

If you are reading this then you probably aren’t starving.

After Survival, We Enter Into Personal Fulfillment

Most of modern society are not in a mode of survival. We are actually quite removed from the basic forms of  survival. We have become domesticated cats whom are confused about how to release these survival skills that have been passed to us.

Once you move away from a state of survival, you must enter a new one. The natural course would lead us to a state of personal fulfillment.  Our basic needs are comfortably filled, we now move to our wants and desires. I am not judging whether this new perception is right or wrong, but it is what we are experiencing. The problem is that survival instincts like goal setting do not work correctly in this environment.

The Error With Goal Setting And The Remedy

Goal setting is an excellent survival instinct and a good skill for life planning, but it sucks at personal fulfillment.  This is due to the forward motion that is created by goal setting.  We don’t allow ourselves the time to enjoy life because we are too busy on moving to the next goal. It is the opposite of how personal fulfillment should work.  Instead of moving forward, we need to learn how to stop and enjoy the present.

In order to remedy the situation, we must remove the corrupted goal-setting skill from the personal fulfillment directory in our systems.  In its placement, we need to learn how to enjoy life in the most simple of ways.
