It might seem a little confusing and odd at first, but we are just a simple community of misfits searching for something larger than ourselves.

This morning I started pondering on the purpose of life. The same lame question that everyone thinks about occasionally on a given day. We should really be asking ourselves “Why am I asking whats the purpose of life?” I really don’t think it is a question that can
be answered in the same way one asks “What is your favorite flavor of ice cream” or “What was the score of the Devil Rays game last night”. If the answer was something factual like a baseball game, then we wouldn’t all still be asking it. If the answer is an opinion then we enter a circle of contradiction and are asking the wrong question.
I was reading the introductory chapter to my Psychology textbook, when it admitted that Psychology can’t answer the big questions of life. Damn. Oh well, time to look to my spirit guide. Surely, he will give me some superficial meaning to my life. Then I can move on to the next item on my list - washing the car.
I don’t think it is wrong to ask the question, but I think it is foolish to go out and seek the answer. When we put our focus on ourselves, then we won’t ever get anywhere. It is when we start asking the service desk representative’s question, “What can I do for you?” that we actually go anywhere. If we turn our focus towards others and creation, then we won’t need the question “What is the purpose of my life?”. We will be too busy helping God restore the world back to Eden.

Exactly… I find myself asking that question often. Funny thing is there are plenty of things to be doing. I’ve got plenty of tools the Lord has given me…but then the tool that I have doesn’t look as intriguing as the one over there. So what happens? Usually nothing because I’m so focused on that tool I don’t have. What if we just started serving with what we have today?
It would be a revolution. I think people like the idea of serving more than actually serving right now. We have this complacency and routine where we like the idea of changing to always serve but it is harder than one thinks. If we do find the spark within all of us to change then I think Nickelback’s song “Everyone Cared” would be an accurate portrayal.
