Life’s Purpose Found In A Van

Purpose of Life Found In Community

Last week, I was traveling in a large 15 passenger van packed with college students. We were driving back home to Orlando from a convention in Atlanta.

It was a long drive.

We talked about everything from the genius in classic Will Farrell movies and albums like Linkin Park’s Hybrid Theory to the problems with the labels of modern and postmodern culture. They reminded me of how obnoxious naive I was at 19-20. They reminded me of how classic I had gotten as I remember Zoolander being an above average film not a great one.

To say the least, It was a long drive.

What should we do with our lives?

There was one spot where the conversation got really interesting. They began to talk about their careers, futures, and purpose in life. They wanted to know how to play the game of life. It was inspiring to hear about all the things that they would like to accomplish and take part in, but a few of them were completely confused about who they wanted to be.

They wanted to know their purpose..

its funny how we would like for God to work in our modern economic systems.

Stephen you should be a circus clown - God

What if we are looking at it the wrong way? We want to ask, “What am I supposed to be doing with my life?” or “What do I want to do with my life?”, but this is the wrong question to ask. If we ask these questions then we will never get anywhere.

We all want to be an artist.

We all want to be a millionaire.

We all want to be the president of a trash bag company.

But not everyone can.

Find Your Purpose In Community

The real question to ask yourself is what can you do right now for the world? In blogger lingo, we call this our niche. In life lingo, we should call this our purpose. Our communities have needs and they are looking for you to help them. It could be developing programs for at-risk kids, financial planning for young families, or writing inspiring songs for frustrated adults.

The key is to look at your skill sets, hobbies, life background and environment that you belong to. Is there somewhere you can go tomorrow and say, “I can help you with that”? It might not be your dream job. You might not even be paid for it, but dream jobs have to start out with simple servanthood.  If you want to play the game of life then you need to look at who you can serve today.

  1. Quint says:

“Ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of his life is, but rather
must recognize that it is he who is asked. In a word, each man is questioned by
life; and he can only answer to life by answering for his own life; to life he
can only respond by being responsible.”
    -Victor Frankl

When I first read this quote, it hit me like a ton of bricks. God isn’t going to tell me what my purpose in life is. I have to go out and take action to find it. Getting involved is the best way to find meaning. Sitting on your hands waiting for revelation is a sure recipe for regret.

Hi Quint, thanks for the quote. I’m going to put it into my quotes folder for later use :).

I like how you said that we will only find meaning by actually taking action. God will give revelation when we make a conscious effort ourselves.
