Forget the Coffee and Red Bull; Grab the Guitar

It seemed like an eternity had passed, but I was able to do it again last night. Alone for the few moments where I could be by myself and play. Play like nobody could hear;  Play with the intensity of the day’s frustration. Yesterday, I took my guitar onto the porch, sat on a chair and jammed with only me and God watching. Well my son was there too trying to twist my tuning machines.

The Activity

Each one of us has or at least should have something that releases us from this world. It is the activity that gives you the refreshment of a well rested night of sleep and the adrenaline of watching the Florida Gators win the National Title in person. For me it is playing the guitar. Whenever I’m pissed off, I could just rip up on my guitar and everything will be cool again. A good friend of mine struggles hard with depression and she paints to help get her through the days. Another friend is more of a jock than I and wrestles, works out, and punches things to get him excited. I don’t believer that the activity for everyone is done alone. I am really introverted so it would make since for me to be by myself, but my wife loves to be around people. Sitting at the local pub with all of our closest friends gives her what she needs to experience The Activity.

Only Entertainment?

Whether it is in a personal or social setting, it is unbearable to live without these activities. They give us a time to reflect and let out all the exciting, frustrating and bland moments of the recent days, weeks and months. Last night was the first time in months that I was able to jam outside of band practice by myself. Life gets busy and then life gets depressing, because we put The Activity as a wishful thought instead of an obligation. After all, it is only for my own personal entertainment.

How long has it been since you were able to let loose and be entertained by The Activity?
