Rain
Friday, it rained. It poured. I was stuck in my apartment alone with my ten month all day. He stayed home from daycare because he had some virus which made him really sick. I’m in the process of looking for a new job and Erica makes nearly double what I made teaching. You can guess who got to stay home with a sick kid on a rainy day.
Sometimes I do enjoy the rain. On calm and relaxing days when there is nothing to do
but stare through the window there is nothing as soothing as the rain. It also helps the kids sleep through the night, which is always a gift from God. Yet, the rain is not something that generally makes us happy. Living in the rainforest known as Florida, it becomes something of an annoyance.
This is not the perspective of the ancient middle east. Rain would only come once or twice for the entire year.Up until the rain would come, the plants would begin to die out which would decrease the food supply of animals. The animals in turn would starve and become unedible for people. When it rained, it poured. The people would run out of their homes and run carelessly through the streets in the rain. They would bathe themselves in God’s gift for them.Â
Do we view rain this way? We know how it forms and its cycles. We can even create it, but I don’t think we respect it. Rain is God’s constant provider for the Earth. Without it, the world would slowly drift and die. It feeds us. It comforts us. I cannot remember the last time I ran outside and bathed myself in the rain (with clothes on). Rain might be part of a continuous natural cycle, but every time it does rain - it is God’s presence coming down.
