There I was this morning sitting innocently in my char. Patiently and purposefully plotting out my tasks for the day on my Emergent Task Planner. I had scribbled in the times for my monday schedule of classes that I had to teach. First was 8th grade computers at nine. Then followed by 7th grade computers and 3rd grade art at 10 and 11. My final class was a 1st grade computers at 2, which they only play computer games anyway. It would be the perfect time for me to finish scanning the seniors whom are graduating photos. So I quickly scribble in a half-hour block to finish this task and feel excited about the day ahead.

The day was going very well and tasks were getting finished right and left. This was until I heard those footsteps coming up the door and realized that I forgot about my highschool helpers (I should put helpers in quotes) who arrive right before first grade computer starts. First he walks in the door wearing her sweater and then she follows behind tugging on the back of it. I just lost it. From that point on, we couldn’t stop from laughing hysterically. One joke after another left no time to complete my final task for the day: Scanning those senior’s pictures. I didn’t get to throw away my Planner Sheet today, but it is fine. Sometimes an unscheduled time for laughing with friends is more important than finishing every task.

Procrastination the Doctor Orders

This is a lesson that I have learned today. It is a high priority for me to plan out all the tasks for the day, but completing tasks and marking checks on a schedule is only a part of a purposeful day. It is just as important, if not more, to allow oneself to be open to healthy procrastination. Life is not about objects and abstractions. It is to live in a web of relationships with other individuals. We need to lift our heads from our desks every once in awhile and go into the hallway to waste time. At the end of the day we might have more work for tomorrow on our desks, but we’ll smile as we walk out of the office.
