There it was staring straight into my eyes. The nose a little off-center, the eyes were sitting where the forehead should be and the skin was a little orange looking, but overall this self-portrait was very well done for a student in my second grade class. It was my first Art class of the day and only days before I was rushing around trying to figure what I’d go over in the class when it appeared right before my eyes. Literally I opened up my mailbox at school and there was this pamphlet about how to draw self-portraits. It was brilliant.

Self-portraits are really a neat expression of art; especially when done in a impressionistic style. It gives the artist a chance to examine himself and the onlookers a view into the artist’s soul. I’ve never really done a self-portrait. Maybe because I’m afraid of what others will realize about me, but also I have become so busy with outside stuff that I’ve lost track of my inner actions. In itself, there is nothing wrong with getting caught up and excited about the outside world. It just becomes scary when one becomes so entranced with external realities that she forgets the "under construction" sign posted inside of her heart.

While I am very good at analyzing and reflecting on the plural we and us, I have failed a bit at the reflection of my own being. It is quite hard to do this in the mesh of reality we live in, but I do believe we need to make a conscientous effort for quiet reflections on our personal being as well as the interactions between the collective us as a society.
